The Media Lab was set up between January 1 and June 30 and formally launched on July 1, 2008. The public inauguration took place on July 15, 2008 at the hands of Prof. Pradip Narayan Ghosh, Vice-Chancellor, Jadavpur University.
The Lab houses the 'Future of Celluloid' project supported by the
Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust (NRTT), Mumbai, under its 'Arts and Culture' programme.
Jadavpur University provides infrastructure and other vital support. Phase 1 of the project employed seven personnel, including research and technical staff, and ended on December 31, 2009. Phase II began on March 1, 2011. A total of thirteen personnel are employed in the Lab at the moment.
Activities in the Lab (both within and outside the scope of the 'Future of Celluloid' project) include building research databases on aspects of Indian cinema and media, digitization of documents for collaborative research, organizing training workshops in film, New Media and Digital Humanities. These are supervised by the faculty members of the Department of Film Studies.
The Lab is housed in the newly built Gandhi Bhavan on the Jadavpur campus of Jadavpur University.
